Just outside of Idaho Springs the Cascade Creek off-road trail is one of the many trails that are close to Denver, Colorado. This rocky road travels under the cover of the pine and aspen trees in the Arapaho National Forest and can be used as a 4WD route between Idaho Springs and Georgetown when combined with Saxon Mountain. It is part of a network of several other trails that can provide a full day of wheeling that is close to home.

Join John Santi as he leads us up Cascade Creek for a great day. meet up at the parking lot next to Carls JR. in Idaho Springs at 9 and leave for the trail at 9:30. Be sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, food and the GRMS radio.

Known as the backway into the Great Sand Dunes, Medano Pass offers travelers a very unique experience you will not find anywhere else in Colorado. One of only a few primitive roads that cross the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Medano Pass follows the route of the 1806 expedition of Lt. Zebulon Pike, revealing breathtaking scenery, abundant dispersed camping, countless water crossings, and deep sand you generally only find in desert environments. The Great Sand Dunes are the tallest dunes in North America, rising to a maximum height of 750 feet from the floor of the San Luis Valley, covering about 19,000 acres. If you are looking for the only beach-like offroad experience you can find in the Rocky Mountains, Medano Pass is certainly a trail you need to see. This trail is a 22 mile 4WD trail. You will need a high-clearance 4WD vehicle to navigate the soft sand, creek crossings and rocky sections of the road.

We will drive south from Castle Pines to the Medano Pass Primitive Road on day 1 and search for one or more of the dispersed camp sites located off the road approximately 7 miles into the trail. Day 2 will consist of driving the trail east to west towards the Sand Dunes. We will then set up camp at another dispersed site about 15 miles into the trail, then drive to the Sand Dunes and explore the area by Jeep and foot. On day 3, we will drive west to east towards the start of the road and camp at another dispersed campsite near the eastern trailhead. We will drive home day 4.

Drive time on the primitive road is about 3 hours so we will have time to explore the area and add in a hike or two around the Sand Dunes and up to Medano Lake if desired. Please bring your own camping/hiking supplies, food and plenty of water. Pets are permitted but must be leashed.

Meet up at Ziggi’s Coffee at 10am on July 14th. 7298 Lagae Road, Castle Pines.

The Transfer Trail, situated near Glenwood Springs, Colorado is the main overland route into the White River National Forest SE Flat Tops area. The road delivers you deep into the heart of meadows filled with wildflowers, thick forest of spruce, fir, pine and aspen trees and scenic lakes. Mixed into the experience are vistas of the distant Elk Mountains to the south, and No Name Creek when you find yourself at Windy Point overlook. This off-road route was originally part of the Ute Indian Trail System, then later became a toll road for the Hip Roof Saw Mill at Windy Point. A sheep farmer then bought the land and herded sheep in the area. The old road system connected through the Flat Tops to distant towns such as Meeker and Yampa. Although the Mill and much of the old road system is long gone, the Transfer Trail remains.

We will drive to Glenwood Springs on day 1 and up to the Transfer Trail about 10 miles in, then head towards the Bowen Lake Loop to set up camp for the first night at a dispersed camp site located in the area. On day 2, we will leave the Bowen Lake Loop area and drive the remainder of the Transfer Trails and depending on the trail conditions, add in Grizzly Jeep Road or drive part of the Blair Mountain trail and find a new campsite for the night about 6 miles in at Adams Lake or Elk Lakes or continue on just past the summit about 11 miles in and camp around the Blair Overlook. If we decide to add in another day, we can drive back down Blair Mountain onto Coffee Pot Road about 15 miles in to set up camp for the night or return via Coffee Pot Road towards Dotsero and head home.

Please bring your own camping/hiking supplies, food and plenty of water. Additional gas could be useful.

Meet up at Marion’s of the Rockies at 9am on July 23rd. 2805 Colorado Blvd, Idaho Springs.

Situated about an hour from the Denver and Boulder Metro areas, Kingston Peak is a high-altitude trail that is a must-do for anyone in the area. Although they call this the Kingston Peak Trail, the real beauty and focal point are the amazing views of James Peak for almost the entire route. James Peak is 13,294 feet and is named in honor of Dr. Edwin James, an early explorer, historian, and botanist who was a member of the famous Stephen H. Long expedition to Colorado in 1820.

The Wheeler Geologic Area, a unique 60-acre volcanic rock formation in the La Garita Wilderness of the San Juan Mountains in southern Colorado, is accessible by hiking or a 4-wheel drive road and features bizarre, eroded volcanic ash formations.
Here‘s a more detailed look at the Wheeler Geologic Area:
Location:
Located in the San Juan Mountains, about 10 miles east-northeast of Creede, Colorado.
Geological Features:
The area is characterized by a landscape of eroded volcanic ash formations, creating bizarre and otherworldly rock formations.
History:
Originally designated Wheeler National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, it was the first national monument in Colorado.
The area was later downgraded to a Geologic Area and incorporated into the La Garita Wilderness in 1950.
The formations are named after Captain George M. Wheeler, who explored and surveyed the area in 1874.
Accessibility:
The area can be reached by an 8.4-mile hike on the East Bellows Trail (FS790) or by a 14-mile four-wheel drive road.
The 4-wheel drive road is known to be challenging, with some sections requiring high-clearance vehicles.
Activities:
The area is popular for hiking, backpacking, and off-road driving.
Dispersed camping is allowed outside the geologic area itself, but not within the formations.
Camping and restroom facilities are available at Hansen‘s Mill, located near the East Bellows Creek trailhead.
Other notable points:
The area is part of the La Garita Caldera, which experienced eruptions about 25 million years ago.
The Wheeler Geologic Area is a popular destination for geologists and adventurous travelers.
The area is also known for its scenic views and unique landscape.

Explore this 2.5-mile out-and-back trail near Guanella Pass, Colorado. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 20 min to complete. This trail is great for camping and hiking, and it‘s unlikely you‘ll encounter many other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are May through September. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

This location is registered as a Colorado State Natural Area with large areas of peat-forming wetlands quite reddish in color due to the iron in the ground water draining from surrounding calcareous rocks.

The Iron Fens are a rare and extremely sensitive habitat. It is required to stay on the trail within the fens to protect the sensitive ecosystem. Dogs are also required to be on leash. For more information on the area, please visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3803512.pdf

In order to reach the trailhead, a high clearance 4WD vehicle is recommended. During the winter months, a gate closes Guanella Pass Road. The gate is installed at Duck Creek Picnic area, near the beginning of the road (Country Road 1038) leading to this trailhead. You can still reach this trail in the winter months, but the road closure adds considerable distance to your trip.

We will meet up at the Loaf & Jug in Bailey at 9:30 and leave for the trail at 10. Be sure to bring good walking shoes, lunch, water and the GRMS.

Get to know this 35.4-mile out-and-back trail near Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Generally considered a moderately challenging route. This trail is great for off-road driving, and it‘s unlikely you‘ll encounter many other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are June through November. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

Transfer Trail is closed to wheeled motorized vehicles from November 23rd to May 20th. Motorized over-the-snow travel is permitted during this time period, as snow conditions allow. The trail is groomed for snowmobile travel by the Flattoppers Snowmobile Club through a Special Use Permit with the White River National Forest.

For off road driving, you can drive up Coffee Pot Road first, so you can head downhill on the Transfer Trail and enjoy the views at Windy Point and above Glenwood Springs. However, since there is a large convenient staging area at the bottom of the trail, this route starts at the bottom. The bottom also has many side trails to explore, including a challenging 50"-wide ATV trail. If you are not camping at the top and just want a single-day adventure, start from the bottom as described here.

Trail is very steep and narrow at the bottom with tight brush in places. Above Windy Point, mud is the challenge. Some driving experience is recommended, especially going uphill

Hello Mile High Jeepers! Patrol 1, the Hobo Jeepers are happy to announce that once again we will be hosting the Mile High Jeep Club Creepy Crawl. The event will be on Saturday October 12th at William C. Russell Park in Central City. Please come around 5:00 - 5:30 pm to start the festivities. Snacks, hot chocolate etc. will be provided. If you have not attended this event previously, it’s a family friendly event where you will be challenged to test your nerve against ghosts and goblins as you wander through the old cemeteries of the Central City area. Follow clues as they guide you to places unknown and contemplate your own mortality to acquire the knowledge to survive the night and complete your quest. (Think of a type of scavenger hunt) There will be a pre-event huddle to review the rules and handout the clues around 5:45pm. At 6:00pm we will send you on your way to find the answers to the clues. Be back at the park by 8:00pm for snacks, hot drinks and prizes/awards based on how well you answered the clues and other stuff. Some things to remember for this event: - Dress warm! - Bring flashlights to help find clues - Bring paper and pencil/pen pen for taking notes. You will be provided coordinates to guide you to each cemetery so you will need a navigation tool: - A non-cell phone based GPS works best - Google Maps on your phone should work IF you download the maps around Central City ahead of time. Cell service is sketchy.
